I know, I know. when you hear eggnog you probably shudder as you think of that overly sweet dairy drink sold by the boatload in supermarkets across America. Jeg forstår det. I used to think that, too. See, when I was little my mom used to buy that white carton of eggnog with the holly on the side. There was just one problem: it was way too sweet. Id usually have to cut it with plain low-fat milk just to make it drinkable. But as I got older, my mother started having holiday parties and she realized she couldnt serve that sicky sweet concoction. She realized she had to make her own. The eggnog our grandparents used to drink. The kind you find in that classic cookbook The Joy of Cooking. The kind with alcohol. It was so much better than the store bought stuff and not just because it was alcoholic. My mother didnt use nearly as much sugar as you find in the store bought version and the beaten egg whites gave it a frothiness that felt like winter in the mountains.
That someone was sports writer, Pierce Egan who supposedly named the drink after his book, Life in London, or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom. As with a lot of vintage cocktails theres another theory on how the drink got its name: as a tribute to Professor Jerry Thomas, a celebrated bartender at San Franciscos Occidental Hotel in the 1860s. This is the version I believe, after all its a cocktail and cocktails come from bartenders so. No matter which story is true though, one things for sure, the drink was definitely not named after that famous cat mouse cartoon of the 40s and 50s.
Seeing as how both drinks have such a colorful history, it only makes sense that the tradition lives on today and we continue to imbibe this wonderful elixir. But while one elixir is good, two is better. I mean, who doesnt love sipping on a hot drink when its cold outside. I know I do, and the fact that the Tom Jerry is made with the same ingredients as the Eggnog means less work for you. Simply split the drink in two, serve and be merry.
Like eggnog, syllabub is made of a dairy product but as a base, syllabub uses cream. To it, you add wine or hard cider along with sweetener and flavoring. A modern dessert form uses whipped cream, wine or sherry, sugar, and lemon juice.
British journalist Pierce Egan takes the original credit for creating it in 1821 for the bookLife in London; or, The day and night scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, esq., and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom.
Where did the name eggnog come from?
Made with eggs, dairy, sugar and booze, eggnog gained popularity in the 18th century as eggs and milk became more widely available. Even George Washington had his own boozy recipe that calls for a half pint each of whiskey, brandy, rum and sherry, in addition to cream, milk, eggs and sugar no word how many this recipe serves. Modern versions call for less alcohol and include baking spices.
Using brandy and rum to add in a big boozy base, the rich fluffy batter and frothy milk is like a spicy aromatic version of an eggnog latte! When we served our version to our guests, they all responded that they liked our version! They liked how much more balanced and rich our version was.

What is a Tom and Jerry? It's an old fashioned winter cocktail that's full of rum and brandy. I'm not sure if the Tom and Jerry is a 'my family' thing, or a small town thing, or a Midwestern thing because most people I've talked to have never heard of it.
How much batter should i add to this drink?
If any dessert is synonymous with American culture, it's pie. This American standard has historically been a celebration of seasonal ingredients. At the first sign of spring, we begin to covet rhubarb and strawberry pies. This craving eventually gives way to blackberry, peach, cherry, and blueberry pies in the summer months. By the time fall rolls around, the king of all American desserts apple pie is in full swing. And as winter closes in, we celebrate the end-of-year holidays with our supply of pumpkin, sweet potato, and pecans. Men denne sæsonbestemte pie-tidsplan har kun en fejl: Hvordan håndterer du off-season pie cravings?
