If you enjoy Asian food, chances are good youve come across sweet chili sauce before. Called nam chim kai in Thailand, this sauce is sweet, tangy, garlicky and spicy with a thick texture that makes it perfect for dipping.
Thai Sweet Chili sauce is delicious with Baked Spring Rolls, Vietnamese Summer Rollsand crispy Chinese egg rolls. We also love to dip Bacon Wrapped Chicken Bitesinto this perfect sauce. Pop a toothpick in each chicken bite and serve on a platter with a bowl full of Sweet Chili Sauce for a great party snack or appetizer.
A flavorful chili paste creates the base for this easy chili sauce recipe. I use Sambal Oelekwhen I make chili sauce. Be sure to get a chili paste that doesnt have additional sweeteners or garlic added as this will affect the flavor of the finished sauce.
I use a microplane grater to get the carrot into teeny tiny shreds so as not to disrupt the smooth thick texture of the sauce. The carrot adds a lovely color to the sauce along with a little extra flavor. This sauce definitely doesnt taste carrot-y and most people will never know you snuck a vegetable into their dipping sauce!
Now here's something I can see becoming a permanent fixture in my house! I love egg rolls: HIGH FIVE FORKS! Confucious says Eggroll a day keeps hunger away.. Or something like that..:
Is sweet and sour sauce gluten-free?
Although this particular sauce is generally served with Chinese food, its delicious with a number of different types of other food as well! Here are some of my favorite recipes to make alongside this one. It really is soversatile!
3. Take one rectangle of filo and, with the shorter side nearest you, spread about2 tbsp of the mixture along the edge, leaving about 4cm at each side. Fold these sides over the filling and roll up.
4. Place on a parchment-lined baking tray, seam-side down, and repeat with the remainingfilo and filling. Brush each spring roll with a little peanut oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until crisp and golden. Meanwhile mix the sweet and sour sauce and chilli oil ina small bowl. Serve the warm spring rolls with the dipping sauce alongside.
Pour enough oil into a large heavy skillet to reach a depth of 1 inch. Heat the oil over moderately high heat until it reaches a temperature of 350F on a deep-fry or instant read thermometer. Fry the spring rolls in batches of four, turning occasionally, until golden and crisp, 3 to 4 minutes total. Transfer the fried spring rolls to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Serve immediately with Sweet and Sour Sauce and any extra sesame-coated pineapple sticks.
Drool-worthy mash-up: spinat artiskok dip nachos
Vegetarian Spring Rolls are delicious and super easy to make. Using store-bought coleslaw mix speeds up the prep time and gets these appetizers to the table in 25 minutes! And, dont forget that sweet and sour dipping sauce with a mild kick from the chilies!
Do you ever have those moments where you are pushing a cart through your local grocery store and you see an item that youve not purchased for such a long time, and you just have to have it That happened to me last week. When I shop for groceries, I really like to take my time. First, I walk around the perimeter and pick up fruit and veggies, bread of some kind, possibly a steak or a chicken breast to cook for myself when John. is not going to be home for dinner, and then on to the frozen section for whatever might strike my fancy.
Last week, while looking at the chilled dips and sauces, I saw a huge pile of packaged eggroll wrappers. I immediately thought of deep fried crab rolls. I used to make those at least once a month. Next, I picked up some crab meat and continued on to do the rest of my shopping. It wasnt until I returned home and started to put my purchases where they belonged, that it dawned on me – crab rolls area lot of effort for one person; John. cant eat fish, so Im not sure I wanted to put in the effort for just myself.
In an instant, my deep fried crab roll dreams were gone, and the eggroll wrappers became a vessel for these vegetarian spring rolls. The spring rolls were fantastic, and the dipping sauce that I prepared worked really well with them, but alas, the packaged crab is still sitting in my refrigerator hoping that its expiry date does not come before I get the urge to do something with it.
These vegetarian spring rolls were certainly worth the time and effort though; and thats because there is very little time and effort needed. This is such a simple recipe, but the pay off is so great. I was able to make 12 spring rolls with dipping sauce in under 30 minutes. I didnt serve anything else with them. John. and I sat on the balcony in the middle of a Sunday afternoon and at all twelve!
Okay, Dear Reader, heres an update for you. This recipe was originally posted in 2022. In August of 2022, I made the exact same recipe once more and updated my photos. I followed the recipe exactly like before, but this time, I added the sesame seeds and green onions. They didnt change the flavour much, but the onion-y taste became more dominant, which I really liked.
Since posting the original recipe, my daughter, McKenna has moved in with us. She was at home the day I made these, so instead of John. and I splitting the 12 spring rolls between us both, we shared with her and only got 4 each. That might seem like a lot, but thats all we ate for lunch that particular Sunday.
Lastly, you might not believe this, but I had a package of imitation crab in the fridge again! I was so excited! My plan was to use up the leftover egg roll wrappers once the spring roll filling was used up to make myself some of those delicious crab rolls. The package of egg roll wrappers that I often buy have 16 wrappers and this recipe only uses 12 of those, so I was excited to be able to use up the remaining 4 wrappers with the crab filling.
So, I made the filling and once it was all said and done, I tasted it to make sure it was seasoned properly. Well, it was too salty to eat. I had added salt, in addition to the soy sauce and hoisin sauce in my crab filling recipe. I had to throw it out, I couldnt rescue it. So, needless to say, Im probably never buying crab again! Only these Vegetarian Spring Rolls with Chinese Sweet and Sour Dipping Sauce for me from now on!

Tai Pei also has some chicken, veggie, and shrimp egg rolls, or mini spicy chicken egg rolls. Or mini vegetable spring rolls in addition to the flavors I tried! These great egg roll or spring rolls would be perfect for a party or a game night with some friends to make the night easier and faster while maintaining great flavor and taste.
They have not compromised the crispy light shell, farm fresh produce and greatdelicious taste. Their new gluten free spring rolls will evoke mouthwateringflavors of Asia with their specially prepared spring roll wrapper made from handselected garbanzo and fava beans.
